Hentley Farm

Hentley Farm certainly has the cellar door wow factor. Situated among rolling hills on the banks of Greenock Creek it was a magnificent winery to mark our 50th cellar door visit. Don't worry if your sat nav appears to be veering you off in to the unknown, the approach to this winery is via an unsurfaced road. Driving between the vines and up towards the stone buildings I felt most excited. The cellar door itself certainly did not disappoint. The main tasting bar has room for 3-4 small groups and on our visit there were two delightful ladies hosting.

On this occasion I was designated driver so myself and our elder son went outside for a run around. To his delight there was a large court yard with raised boxed seating which was most to run around and over. Set around the court yard were the cellar door, the wonderful looking restaurant and the very nice loos! In front of the cellar door was a large grassed area leading down to a pretty creek and to the right were the vines. After playing outside for at least twenty minutes we went inside to warm up. We discovered my husband only making his way through the reds whilst younger baby son was busy smiling at everyone.

Inside the cellar door there were a further two rooms open. A group tasting room and the wonderful lounge area, complete with the burning log fire and the resident dog curled up in the coach. It looked truly inviting and perfect for relaxing with a group of friends over a delicious winter red. There was not really room for kids to play in the cellar door itself so I would recommend that you visit this winery on a dry day if you have young kids that aren't happy to sit and watch you taste!

We did not eat in the restaurant but a couple enquiring at the cellar door if they could have a table were told it was fully booked so best to ring in advance.

It is a tradition among my husband and I that the taster buys the driver a bottle to enjoy at home. That evening we cracked open a bottle of the 2013 stray mongrel over supper. It was smooth and delicious and well worth purchasing at just $25 to save paying the $10 cellar door fee.
